Before you compare reverse osmosis filtration systems, here is a list of factors that you should carefully consider.


Most persons consider the membrane to be the most important part of a reverse osmosis system. Therefore, it is only right that you take serious consideration with the quality of the membrane when comparing reverse osmosis systems.

The smaller the pores of the membrane the better chance that you will have to eliminate as many contaminants as possible.

Furthermore, a good quality membrane will last at least 1 to 2 years before requiring a replacement filter. Anything over 2 years is excellent.

There are membranes on the market that you should replace every six months or so. These membranes are good but they are not the best because membranes should last over 1 year regardless of the water quality.

Gallons per Day

Every reverse osmosis water filter system has a limit as to how many gallons a unit can produce each day.

Most household reverse osmosis water filters can produce 50 to 75 gallons of filtered water a day. This amount of water is ideal for a family of 4 to 6 persons.

Interestingly, there are units that can produce 100 gallons or more a day.

When you compare reverse osmosis systems, don't always opt for the unit that will produce the larger amount of water.

The reason is that a unit that produces 100 gallons a day is usually not as effective as a unit that produces 50 gallons a day in terms of removing a greater percentage of contaminants.

Pre-filter and Carbon Filter

How good is the prefilter and carbon filter that is attached to your reverse osmosis system?

The prefilter should be able to effectively remove all sediments from the water before it reaches the membrane.

How many prefilters will the R.O. System have? A few R.O. Water filter units have two (2) prefilters to ensure an almost 100% removal of chlorine and its by-products.

The carbon filter should remove a high percentage of chlorine from the water before it goes through the pores of the membrane.

So when you compare reverse osmosis systems, remember that the higher percentage the better even though 99% is average. Chlorine is bad for the membrane because it reduces the ability of the membrane to perform at its best.

Post Filter

Do you have a post filter? Even though it is not very popular to have a post filter on a reverse osmosis filter, quite a few systems have a post filter.

The post filter will remove any bad taste or impurities that may have been picked up in the tank.

Post filters are especially very common in residential applications because of the extra chlorine involved in the treatment process.

Type of Faucet

There are two types of faucets to choose from when comparing reverse osmosis Water filtration systems.

The first faucet is a non-air gap faucet. With this type of faucet, the finished filtered water is only released through the faucet.

The second type of faucet is the airgap faucet. Both the filtered water and the waste water are sent to the faucet through separate lines.

The whole idea of the Airgap faucet is to prevent waste water from going back into the clean water whenever there is a drain backup.

When most persons compare reverse osmosis filtration systems, they choose the air gap faucet for this reason.

Storage Tank

What's the size of the storage tank? Do you need two (2) storage tanks? Compare the sizes of the storage tank so that you know if the storage tank will be able to store sufficient water.

You must first determine how much water you will need on a daily basis and then compare the sizes on the market. The last thing you want to do is buy a reverse osmosis system with a small storage tank.


What's your price range? Compare reverse osmosis systems price range.

Most reverse osmosis systems cost $100 upwards but there are other costs attached such as replacement cartridges and maintenance costs.

The cost for the unit is different from the cost for replacement cartridges. Some units will require you to change replacement filters every 3 months while others will require a change twice a year.

So when you compare reverse osmosis filtration systems, factor in the overall costs.
